Pointing your domain to Hosting

In almost every second project we need to point Domain to Hosting.

You need to point domain to hosting even if you bought domain and hosting from same company.

In this short article we will cover what exactly you need to shift domain to hosting.

Terms Involved

  • Domain
  • Hosting
  • Name Servers

You require Name Servers details / NS records as godaddy call them.

Your Hosting company provides Nameserver records in the welcome email, when you buy hosting.

Usually, the are like

  • ns1.example.com & ns2.example.com – Most of the companies
  • sns501.bigrock.com & sns502.bigrock.com – Bigrock stuff
  • ns69.domaincontrol.com & ns70.domaincontrol.com – Go Daddy Stuff

But whats the actual task ?

The actual task is to login to your domain panel and look for an option similar to Name servers. They might be directly available on domain dashboard or they might be hidden under DNS Settings.

Then you need to replace previous records with the new one that will point to your server.

And thats all you need! This will point your website to hosting in about 1 hour. Usually it takes less than an hour but domain companies mention that it might take 24-72 hours for nameserver shift.
